- March 2, 2009 - Snow Day!!!!!! - We did not have school due to the snow (or should I say ice) that was on the ground. I decided to knock two birds out with one stone. I spent about 2 hours planning and creating a microweb for my 8532 class with Dr. Clark. In planning this, I decided to use this as a tool for the teachers of the students I am doing my reading enrichment unit with. The Microweb was on Dr. Seuss. It is a CD that includes downloaded sites that teachers can use even when the Internet is down. On the Microweb, I included a site that has several games that children can play as well as some informative sites for more information about Dr. Seuss and his works. I will tie this into my reading enrichment unit by doing a book talk with kindergarten children (after collaborating with teachers, we decided to do a book talk with advanced children who are already reading and need some extension activities) about Dr. Seuss's book Green Eggs and Ham. On day 1, we will talk about what an author is and learn a little about Dr. Seuss. From there, we will get into the book and discuss elements such as the characters, settings, plot, and rhyme schemes. Students will get the chance to act out parts of the book and will use a digital camera to take pictures (media use).
Lesson plan coming soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- April 13, 2009 - (11:30 - 12:00) - Day one of kindergaten reading enrichment. We looked at the sites on the microweb, played some Dr. Suess games on suessville.com, and discussed the author.
- April 14, 2009 - (11:30 - 12:00) - Day two of kindergarten reading enrichment unit. We discussed the book Green Eggs and Ham. During our talk we focused on rhyming words. After listening to the book, we made a list of all of the rhyming pairs we heard in the book. Then, each student took a turn acting out one of those words. The other student had to guess the word and then come up with as many rhyming words that they could think of. This served as an informal assessment to see if children had grasped the concept of rhyming words. To close the lesson, we talked about what happened in the book, what the book taught us, and how Dr. Seuss kept us interested by using rhyming words. Then, children had to answer the question of how we know when words rhyme.
- April 15, 2009 - (11:30 - 12:00) - The day was a little more laid back. The children were comfortable with me and saw this time as a fun time in the library. We read another book with rhyming words, Put me in the Zoo. During our discussion, we talked about the things the strange animal in the story could do, we discussed the rhyming words, and we made up our own endings to the story.
- April 20, 2009 - (11:30 - 12:00) - We sat in the book nook once again. This time, we did not read a story that included rhyme. Instead, the students chose the story. They chose If You Give a Pig a Pancake. I had this book in a series with other books by the author as well as a CD to go with it. Therefore, we listened to the story on the CD and then participated in a pancake dance that was on a sing-a-long song on the same CD. The children had a blast. Therefore, we had to listen to the next story If You Give a Moose a Muffin and do the dance with that story too. Then, we compared the stories and talked about first, next, and last.
